Start up with Uber

“There are a lot of investors out there, they need good ideas, which are feasible and meet the market demand. If you have these factors, money will pour in and Uber is an example”, Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of Uber Thuan Pham shared.

Becoming the CTO of the most valued start up company in the world, the story of Thuan Pham is not less interesting than Uber itself.

Spending childhood in the US with difficulties, the 10 years old boy saw everything as life lessons. Longing to confront challenges, Thuan Pham has been searching for opportunities for learning.

After graduating from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Thuan Pham had worked for a lot of technology company and then VMWare, where he held managing position from 2004 to 2012. After having successful building VMWare and becoming key leaders, he decided to quit for new challenges. For him Uber is really his breakthrough in life. Right after hearing the idea, he knew Uber can influent and change the world. His passion for technology was born when he first met the IBM computer of his friend. Joining Uber in 2013 when Uber is presented in 60 cities with 40 technicians and 13,000 trips every day. After 4 years, he developed the technical department to 2,000 staffs, overcoming challenges during Uber rapid development period to bring this sharing service to users in 450 cities all over the world. The computer system of Uber can meet the transportation demand of more than 50 million trips per day, turning Uber into giant name in the technology. At present, Uber is the most valued start up company with 69 billion USD.

Overcoming life limitation, Thuan Pham – successful Vietnamese technician at Silicon Valley has become the Uber CTO.

Sharing his journey with Uber in 4 years, he said Uber has always faced challenges on the technology. The Uber app was getting a lot of problems due to technical mistakes. In order to solve this issue, he has restructuring the platform to support a smoother operation, so that if any section get into trouble, the app can still in operation. “After the first 18 months working with Uber, there was time of Uber system in Chicago got into trouble for 90 minutes, which made the CEO angry due to the slow response to solve the problem” – he remembered.

However, Uber now does not have this kind of issue anymore, as he has solved this in the beginning. During the phase of start up, they need to quickly overcome failure. As he stressed Uber could not have this success without failure in the past. As such, they will have experience to refine their operation and service quality, stabilizing technology and developing efficient responding team. According to Thuan Pham, Uber has many teams to solve problems with level from 1-5 (at level 5, problem will directly affect users) for timely resolve. Therefore, for every enterprise or start up, do not let any catastrophe or problem go on to the second day for solving. This will only let the customer disappointed and lose trust. As such, this must be done frequently and monitoring in minute. “In applying these principles, Uber has more stability in operation. Over a year I do not have a call in the midnight on occurring problem” – Thuan Pham said.

As of present, the factor of “Optimizing technical infrastructure to develop technology, focusing on human resources are decisive for the success of start - ups” is always right and applied in any moment by Thuan Pham.
