The fourth ASEAN Children Forum, themed “One ASEAN, One Vision For Children”, was organised in Hanoi on June 20. Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam attended the event.
The ASEAN Children’s Forum gives ASEAN countries an opportunity to hear from children and youth, and creates opportunities for children to express their viewpoints and send messages to government officials of ASEAN countries.
One of the main goals of ASEAN is focused on building a friendly ASEAN Community, where all children have the rights to share and enjoy common values.
The four-day forum drew the participation of 35 children from eight ASEAN member countries, who are hoped to raise their voice about the enforcement of children’s rights.
Vietnamese representatives are from Hanoi, the northern province of Bac Kan, the central provinces of Quang Binh and Quang Nam and the Mekong Delta province of Dong Thap.
Speaking at opening ceremony, Minister of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs Dao Ngoc Dung affirmed the ASEAN Community’s commitments to prioritising the promotion of the observation and protection of children’s rights as well as welfare policies.
Minister Dung highlighted that one of major objectives is to build a community friendly to children, a place where all children can share and enjoy common values, and educate ASEAN children on their rights under the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, or UNCRC in short.
Besides, an ultimate goal of this forum is to develop a call for action plan to promote children’s rights through a statement to be issued at the forum’s conclusion, according to Minister Dung.
The minister stressed the significance of the forum to children, during which participants will discuss the prevention and combat of children trafficking and violence against children, and the protection of children from cyber crimes and climate change.
He also expressed hope that a declaration with children’s creative proposals will be built and sent to social welfare chiefs of the ASEAN member countries as well as relevant agencies.
Addressing the event, Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam hoped that
the 4th ASEAN Children’s Forum will continue to participate in realizing the potential of children and youth in each country of the bloc.
He said: "I urge all of you to share the lessons from this forum with your friends after returning to your home country, and to encourage them to play their part in being the voices for children and youth within the ASEAN region.
At the kick-off ceremony, the Deputy Prime Minister presented awards to winners of a painting contest on ASEAN vision towards 2025, including two Vietnamese children. The contest was launched in Vietnam, Cambodia, Myanmar, Thailand, and Singapore.
As schedule, children delegates will have a dialogue with ministry and sector leaders of Vietnam and ASEAN on June 22.
The declaration containing ASEAN children’s proposals is also expected to be issued the same day.
Since 2010, the biennial ASEAN Children’s Forum has become one of the main activities of member countries of ASEAN. Member countries will take turns sponsoring the forum.
