The Pursuit of Creativity of a Young Engineer

Engineer Le Quoc Hung is working for Dong Anh LICOGI Mechanical Joint Stock Company, has succeeded in improving aluminum extrusion mold, which brought a great economic value after two years of hard work.

Practical needs
Being born in 1984 and grown up along the banks of the Ca Lo river in Thuy Lam commune, Dong Anh district, Huynh has always had a great interest in machines since he was a child. He was admitted to LICOGI after his graduation from the School of Mechanical Engineer under Hanoi University of Science and Technology. LICOGI is the wonderland where Huynh applied all what he learnt and obtained effectively. During the production process, he realized that the aluminum extrusion mold that his company was using performed a low level of productivity with some defects. Therefore, he submitted a scientific paper to the Board of Directors then got approval for research and improvement.

Huynh coped with a lot of difficulties when doing his research. On one hand, he lacked practical experience. On the other hand, there was the whole world of difference between theory and practice, so it was not always appropriate to apply theory to practice in a dogmatic way. Fortunately, Huynh’s company still placed great trust in him in difficult times and even sent him to South Korea for study and training. Processing technology planning was gradually completed after years of his learning by experience and studying materials in Korea. Equipment system testing, however, was not easy at all. A team of machinists was sent to Hanoi University of Science and Technology and some mechanical engineering institutions for training and application. Many parts of the advanced aluminum extrusion mold were not available in Vietnam; hence, they needed commissioning from foreign countries.
Great economic value
The advanced aluminum extrusion mold took shorter time to process than the old one, said Nguyen Duc Tue, the Manager of Technique in LICOGI. Moreover, the quality of products manufactured by the new one was much more durable as a result of a standardized process which was suitable for computerized numerically controlled (CNC) machines (CNC turning centers – PV). The success of improving aluminum extrusion mold helped the company become independent of material supplies from other enterprises. LICOGI, especially thanks to this new system, has been currently a building contractor for a number of big projects in Hanoi such as CIPUTRA Urban Area, LIDECO 32 Urban Area, Guom Lake Plaza and so on. Consequently, the company not only yielded a multi-billion-VND profit but also created more jobs for its personnel.
In 2011, Le Quoc Huynh’s research into improving aluminum extrusion mold has won the second prize in the Vietnam Science and Technology Creation Contest by Vietnam Fund for Supporting Technological Creations (VIFOTEC). The new advanced aluminum extrusion mold has proven to be superior to the old system through practical application, yet it has not widely applied due to some reasons. The success of advanced aluminum extrusion mold has been made possible by the joint effort of LICOGI personnel as the whole. In near future, Huynh and his colleagues will continue to be engaged several research into improving some existing mechanical equipment. Their goals are not only to enhance the efficiency of equipment and machines in the field of mechanical engineering, but also to aspire to be creative. That is what they have cherished since their childhood, said Huynh.
