On August 12, 2013, U Minh Thuong National Park (Kien Giang Province) was awarded an ASEAN Heritage Park certificate.

The results of recent scientific surveys have shown that the mangrove ecosystem on peat land in U Minh Thuong National Park has special significance. It is home to many rare species of wildlife that play an important role in the ecological balance.

![]() Weighing up to 1kg, the large “flying-fox” (Pteropus vampyrus Linnaeus) is a giant bat species concentrated in U Minh Thuong forest. This bat lives in large flocks in mangrove trees. They hang themselves in trees during the daytime and fly long distances to find food at night. The food of this species is mainly nectar or fruits such as rambutan, mango, and durian.
