STH_Stair House from Deline architecture consultancy and construction
A house circulated with emotional needs and a renovation in living qualities for this typical tube house from our client, a very passionate about architecture, active young couple in Tay Ho District, Hanoi.
They using Stairs, Voids, Bridges and positioning them at the center of the site as an atrium. Blending different functional spaces such as living room, kitchen and bedrooms around by creating split-level structure. We defined two “in one-glimpse space” spaces with “story-teller” stairs as features.
The welcoming area is group of aquatic workshop, high volume living room and kitchen with the suspended exposed concrete stair to complete the atrium. In order to create open space, no wall or column support the Stairs provided. Only one Fengshui partition, which combined by timber fins to shield for the kitchen.
Therefore, whoever wonders what others are up to could tell by one glimpse, from living room view toward aquatic workshop, from living room to kitchen, bedrooms and vice versa, fulfil the request of "emotional needs". Same thing could happen for the bedrooms area and kid playroom. Parents are easily keeping their eyes on children.
In a typical tube house, increasing the use of every space is essential. Large stair landing works as a waiting lounge to welcome people to living room or a stage for family activities to watch from the workshop besides being just a shoe changing area.
All the support for the stairs are hidden away in wall and small steel rods used to support the “in one-glimpse space” concept. Bridges connects two rooms; create a playing area for kids where parent could interact with them as well as leaving a breathing space for this tube house.
Other feature of this project is its double skin facade. The first layer is a combination of stainless steel frame cubes and perforated panels, which controls the sun light, reduces heat and creates interesting visual effects. It enhances the view from inside to outside as well as increasing owner's privacy. Furthermore, the facade is also acting as guide frames for plants to hook and grow. The second layer is temper glass facade with aluminum frame in between the gardens and indoor, hopefully bringing the breathe of nature which is rarely found in big city.
Scent House from Toob Studio
Located on a convenient site - a junction, this moderate-sized house has good view as an advantage in Hoan Kiem District. However, the houses look out westward, which seems quite annoying because it always receives a lot of sunbeams is another disadvantage. As a result, we had covered up the house by a parallel steel frame in order for lianas grow green all over the front side.
Inner plan is allocated simply but satisfying enough for 3 generations to use in a modest area. Although materials used are all easy to find, in the process of construction we had always paid high attention on design, structure estimation, as well as workmanship’s skills.
Altar area of the house placed separately, up in the central highest floor. There is only one entrance through the garden, which sounds quite inconvenient, but for those who live and visit would figure out the reason. Mess of life could be cleaned out of daily activities, walking through natural space to come in this quiet and sacred space.
SMA254 from SMA Studio
SMA254, located on an area of just 10m2 in Cau Giay District (Hanoi), is the remnants of Hanoi’s rapid development. Its narrow facade overlooks a 1- meter-long alley and other sides are neighbors’ houses. Its small surface area, with a size of 2.5x4 meters, causes many difficulties.
It poses a question for the architects of SMA Architecture Studio of how to ensure a small yet flexible house that uses both natural light and ventilation for maximum energy savings. The original idea was to use stacked-up cubic modules with different proportions to create spatial interactions from every direction and to make it possible those living in the house to see each other from any floor.
Materials such as iron, sheet metal and steel are painted white. Not only does this make the house look airy and spacious but this also has a reflective effect, helping to spread the light throughout the floors and mezzanines. The mezzanines are made of rubber wood combined with white sheet metal and grey concrete floor, creating a contrast between modern and rustic.
All spaces in the house are flexibly linked together from floor to roof. The house consists of 2 main floors. In-between is mezzanines with different heights so as to create ventilation and to ensure the compliance to building regulations. The spaces are shared to avoid stuffiness.
There are floor ventilation and glass floors between the spaces to help raise interactions and create airiness for the house. Thanks to the natural light and ventilation, lamps and air-conditioners are not needed, which saves a lot of energy. The facade area is windows which can open up to 70%.
These windows are combined with balconies, turning the indoor space into an open one to create maximum interactions with the outside, especially in nice weather. Since we are young architects, we use iron ladders not only to save space but also increase physical activities.
The pots on the house’s rooftop use the automatic irrigation system made of lightweight materials with different heights and sizes. These pots help shadow the house and are a place for the architects to relax during working hours.
