US Ambassador laments Former General Secretary Do Muoi's passing

US Ambassador Daniel Kritenbrink highlighted the role of former General Secretary Do Muoi in advancing the process of reconciliation, and establish official bilateral relations in 1995.

On behalf of the U.S. Mission in Vietnam, Ambassador Daniel Kritenbrink has expressed condolences regarding the passing of Do Muoi, former General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam.

Do Muoi presided over the Party at a time when Vietnam began economic reforms that helped build the foundations of sustained economic growth and renewal, lifting Vietnam and its people out of poverty and providing the economic opportunities they continue to enjoy today, the US Embassy in Hanoi said in a statement.

It was during his term as General Secretary that Vietnam and the United States were able to address shared history openly, advance the process of reconciliation, and establish official bilateral relations in 1995.

"From this legacy, our governments and people have developed the deep partnership and friendship that our two nations enjoy today. We send our sympathies to Do Muoi's family and loved ones, and to the people of Vietnam," the ambassador said.

Do Muoi passed away at 11:12 pm on October 1 at a military hospital in Hanoi after a long time of struggling with serious illness.

It is likely that his funeral will be held with the national mourning etiquette. If so, this would be the third national mourning for a top-ranking Vietnamese official this year.

He was general secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam from June 1991 to December 1997, a period during which Vietnam established diplomatic ties with the US, joined the ASEAN and advanced the Doi moi process that helped bring Vietnam out of poverty and achieve rapid economic growth over the past decades.
