US President visited Uncle Ho's stilt house and met with NA Chairwoman

On May 23 noon, Vietnamese National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan hosted a warm reception to US President Barack Obama at Uncle Ho`s stilt house.

President Obama and senior officials of the delegation met with Vietnamese NA Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan at Uncle Ho's stilt house. After dropping food for fish in pond in front of Uncle Ho's stilt house, Obama and members of the delegation returned to the Presidential Palace to prepare for the press conference.

Shortly thereafter, the US President met with Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc and had courtesy with General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong.

It is reported that US President Barack Obama has a busy schedule in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City during the official visit to Vietnam from May 23-25.

This is the first visit to Vietnam by President Barack Obama and by the third US President since the two countries normalized their relations in 1995, following Bill Clinton in 2000 and George W.Bush in 2006. Since the normalization of relations in 1995, especially after both nations set up a framework for the comprehensive partnership, the Vietnam-US relations have progressed across a variety of fields both bilaterally and multilaterally.

After the welcome ceremony, President Barack Obama held talks with President Tran Dai Quang and had meetings with Vietnamese Party, State and Government leaders to discuss measures to foster the Vietnam-US comprehensive partnership in the time ahead.

Vietnam and the US have stepped up coordination at regional and multilateral forums such as APEC, ARF, ADMM +, EAS and compared notes on issues related to maritime security and the East Sea. They have also joined hand in reinforcing ASEAN solidarity, enhancing ASEAN's central role, and actualizing the US-ASEAN strategic partnership.


Vietnam and the US see great potential for wider cooperation in numerous fields, ranging from politics, national defence, maritime security and safety to education-training, people-to-people exchange, the settlement of humanitarian issues and post-war consequences, climate change response, environmental protection and coping with other global challenges.
