Vietnam and China to settle disputes via peaceful means in accordance with international law

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 13th ASEAN-China Summit in Nanning, China, PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc said that Vietnam always attaches importance to and supports ASEAN-China cooperation.

Delivering speech as part of his official visit to China at the invitation of his Chinese counterpart Li Keqiang from September 10-15, the PM stressed that both sides need to control well differences at sea, perseveringly settle disputes via peaceful means in accordance with international law, the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea to maintain peace and stability in the East Sea as well as in the region.
 

PM Phuc stressed that this is the first time Vietnam participates in the CAEXPO as the Country of Honor, considering it as an opportunity to strengthen economic, trade and investment exchanges and cooperation between Vietnam and China and ASEAN as well.

The Vietnamese PM extended thanks to the Government of China for active support for Vietnamese businesses and localities to join this year’s CAEXPO. He spoke highly of the developments in some of the cooperative domains between the two countries over the past time, in which Vice Premier Zhang took an active role.

PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc told the Chinese Vice Premier that this is the first time Vietnam has attended the CAEXPO as the Honorary Country, which is a good opportunity for Vietnam to enhance economic, trade and investment cooperation with China and other ASEAN countries. 

The PM thanked the Chinese Government for providing support to Vietnamese firms and localities in participating in the expo, adding that he believes in the success of the event thanks to the thorough preparations of the host country and the active participation of ASEAN countries.

He appreciated the progress in Vietnam-China cooperation in several fields, and informed his guest that during the visit, he intends to discuss in depth with Chinese Party and Government leaders measures to promote the stable and healthy development of bilateral ties, including maintaining meetings and contacts between senior officials of the two Parties and countries. 

The two sides should also encourage exchange and win-win cooperation, as well as closer coordination to solve outstanding issues, thus taking bilateral economic, trade and investment ties to a new stage of quality, effective and sustainable development, PM Phuc said.

He went on to say that the two sides should work together to effectively control disputes at sea and persistently dealing with disputes by peaceful measures in line with international law, the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, thus maintaining peace and stability in the East Sea and in the region.

PM Phuc affirmed that Vietnam pursues a consistent external policy of peace, independence, multilateralisation and diversification, with strengthening the friendship and cooperation with China being one of the leading priorities.

PM Phuc went on to say that Vietnam stands ready to promote its role as a bridge between the ASEAN Economic Community and China, work with other ASEAN countries to strengthen all-round cooperation, maintain peace and stability, and settle differences for benefits of all sides in order to contribute to peace, cooperation, development and prosperity in the region. He stated that the ASEAN-China partnership has gained many major achievements over the past 25 years, in which Vietnam has made significant contribution to deepen the ASEAN-China ties.

Vice Premier Zhang Gaoli expressed his belief that the visit of Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc will be a success, contributing positively to the relations between the two Parties and countries. He noted that the presence of the PM and many Vietnamese firms at the 13th CAEXPO demonstrates the importance that the Vietnamese Government attaches to the China-Vietnam and ASEAN-China ties, which helps ensure success of the event. 

The Vice Premier affirmed that the Chinese Party and Government attach importance to the relations with Vietnam, and hope the two sides will maintain high-level contact, enhance political trust,  promote substantive cooperation, expand people-to-people exchange while keeping good control of disputes towards the  stable, healthy and sustainable development of the comprehensive strategic co-operative partnership of the two countries.

Vietnam has treasured and actively participated in the ASEAN-China exhibitions. As a country of honor this year, nearly 140 businesses joined the CAEXPO, an increase of 35% against 2015. Up to now, Vietnam has set up economic ties with 224 countries and territories and signed 12 free trade agreements and is now engaging in talks on other four agreements, including the regional comprehensive economic partnership (RCEP) consisting of ASEAN nations and China.

Vice Premier Zhang affirmed that the Party and Government of China appreciate relations with Vietnam, hoping the two sides to maintain high-level contacts, enhance political trust, foster substantial cooperation, expand people-to-people exchanges, consolidate traditional friendship, effectively control differences, and accelerate the development of the comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership in a stable, healthy and sustainable way.
