Vietnam aims to improve the institutions, build a comprehensive infrastructure system, train human resources, develop science and technology to catch up and exploit opportunities in the Industrial Revolution 4.0.
Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam has asked the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) to keep supporting Vietnam in advancing the development of digital economy and smart cities/communities.
Dam made the request at a meeting with Zhao Houlin, secretary general of the ITU in Hanoi on July 24.
Deputy PM Vu Duc Dam stressed that Vietnam appreciates the role and position of the ITU in the development of the world's telecommunications, fulfilling the mission of connecting people anytime and anywhere.
With the development of new technologies and services on the telecommunication network, the ITU is playing an increasingly important role in supporting member countries, especially developing countries, in policy making and strategic directions, legal framework, standard system, universalization standards and services, improving digital ability for people, Dam said.
Regarding Vietnam’s policy on development of information technology and communication, Dam said that Vietnam focuses on developing modern information infrastructure for digital government construction and digital economy development.

Expressing gratitude to ITU for its effective cooperation with Vietnam through technical assistance programs, institutional development consultancy and legal environment improvement, Deputy PM Vu Duc Dam proposed that the ITU cooperate and further support Vietnam in the development of information technology and communication, especially in the trend of digital transformation, digital economy development, formation of smart communities and cities in Vietnam, successfully implementing targets of Industry 4.0.
The deputy PM hoped that the ITU would facilitate and support Vietnam's participation in the ITU's executive apparatus, particularly, General Secretary Zhao Houlin will support Vietnamese officials in participating in the re-election of the ITU’s Radio Information Service (RRB) for the next term (2019 - 2022).
For his part, Zhao Houlin expressed his pleasure about the rapid development of information technology, communications and telecommunications in Vietnam and he is so impressed by Vietnam’s young engineers with high performance.
The Secretary General of ITU wishes to promote the participation of Vietnamese enterprises in ITU activities such as ITU Telecom World annually held.
