Vietnam declares National Mourning for former President Tran Duc Luong

The State Funeral is scheduled to take place on May 24 and 25.

TTHE HANOI TIMES — Vietnam will hold a two-day State Funeral for former President Tran Duc Luong, with flags flown at half-mast and all public entertainment activities suspended nationwide, according to an official directive issued by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

The State Funeral is scheduled to take place on May 24 and 25, following a special announcement released by the National Funeral Committee on May 22. The decision reflects the deep respect and sorrow of the Vietnamese Party, State, and people for the former leader.

In line with Government Decree No. 105/2012/NĐ-CP on funeral rites for senior officials, Deputy Minister Trinh Thi Thuy signed Official Dispatch No. 2281/CĐ-BVHTTDL outlining national protocols to be observed during the mourning period.

The directive instructs all government offices, public institutions, and Vietnamese diplomatic missions abroad to fly the national flag at half-mast. A black mourning ribbon equal to one-tenth the flag’s width is to be affixed, and the flag hoisted to only two-thirds of the flagpole height.

All public entertainment and cultural events, including concerts, sports competitions, and festivals, are to be cancelled or postponed during the two-day mourning period.

The suspension applies to central and local authorities, public service units, and all organizations involved in cultural or recreational activities. The people’s committees of provinces and major cities have been tasked with implementing and monitoring compliance across localities.

The ministry note that this is a solemn time for the nation to express gratitude and remembrance for former President Tran Duc Luong’s contributions to the country.
