Vietnam demands China stop establishment anniversary of so-called Sansha City
The anniversary violated seriously Vietnam`s sovereignty over the two archipelagos of Paracel and Spratly, stated Vietnam`s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs has protested and demanded China immediately stopped illegal activities held on the so-called Sansha city located on the Paracel islands over which Vietnam claims sovereignty.
Recently, China marked the sixth anniversary of so-called "Sansha city" with numerous activities. The country illegally installed and put in use the sea wave observer equipment on the Woody Island in Vietnam's Paracel archipelago. A Chinese national television held a reality show for children while a Chinese university conducted series of science research in the archipelago under Vietnam's sovereignty.
These moves face strict protest from Vietnam, Le Thi Thu Hang, Vietnam’s Foreign Affairs Spokesperson said in a statement in response to reporters’ questions today (August 10).
"Vietnam requests that China immediately put an end to these wrongful activities,” Hang said.
She stressed that Vietnam has full legal basis and historical evidence to assert its sovereignty over the Paracel (Hoang Sa) and Spratly (Truong Sa) Islands in accordance with international laws.
These activities go against the Vietnam-China Agreement on Basic Principles Guiding the Settlement of Maritime Issues, violated the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties (DOC) in the South China Sea (which Vietnam calls East Sea) and negatively affected the negotiation of a Code of Conduct in the waters (COC), according to Vietnam’s foreign affairs spokesperson.
It’s not beneficial for maintaining the peaceful and stable environment and cooperation in the waters and the good relation between Vietnam and China, especially amid the on-going negotiation of COC, Hang added.
China seized the Paracel Islands from South Vietnam by force in 1974, and has since been illegally occupying the islands. In July 2012, China established a so-called Sansha city with Vietnam's Woody Island in the Paracels as its seat.
