Minh and his counterpart Heiko Maas held talks in a frank and familiar manner with an aim to run effective strategic partnership, Vietnamese Ambassador to Germany Nguyen Minh Vu told reporters.

The visit was expected to open up a new era for the relations on a broader and more actual basis, Vu said, adding that the two sides would build specific plans to strengthen the partnership.

The upcoming cooperation would cover different sectors namely renewable energy, science and technology, education, and culture.

So far, Germany remains Vietnam’s leading trade partner in the European Union while Vietnam is Germany’s key partner in Southeast Asia with two-way trade reaching US$15.6 billion in 2018.

Currently, more than 300 German businesses are operating in Vietnam and have reaped successes in the country over the years.

In terms of politics, the two sides closely cooperate in international forums and agendas, remarkably in the framework of the UN Security Council which Germany is holding nonpermanent membership and Vietnam is seeking for this post for the 2021-2022 term, Vu said.

In 2020, Germany will take the EU chairmanship while Vietnam will hold the chairmanship of ASEAN.

The two countries will celebrate the 45th anniversary of diplomatic ties in 2020.
