The summit between US President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin took place on July 16.
Vietnam applauds the President Donald Trump’s meeting with President Vladimir Putin in Helsinki, Finland on Monday, said the Spokesperson of Vietnam’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs Le Thi Thu Hang in a regular briefing today.
“Vietnam wishes a stable growth of the US-Russia ties, which can contribute positively to the global peace, stability, cooperation and development," Hang stated.
The Trump-Putin meeting earlier this week touched on the US-Russia ties as well as other international issues.
At the event, President Trump also mentioned the suspicion that Russia intervened in US election in 2016. Putin denied meddling and repeated the claims that Russia “doesn’t plan” to interfere in US domestic politics, reported The Guardian.
Then there has been a barrage of criticism in the US after President Donald Trump defended Russia over claims of interference in the 2016 elections, a remark that he reversed one day after the summit, according to BBC.
Mr. Trump meanwhile hailed the summit as being a success.
Ties between the US and Russia have been badly frayed by tensions over issues including Russia's takeover of Ukraine’s Crimean Peninsula, its role in the wars in eastern Ukraine and Syria, and its alleged meddling in the 2016 US election.
