Vietnam and India have agreed to enhance economic and trade partnership to the tune of US$15 billion by 2020.
PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc and Indian President Ram Nath Kovind signed the agreement during their meeting in New Delhi on January 24 as part of the Vietnamese leader’s visit to attend the ASEAN–India Summit.
The two leaders also agreed to hold reciprocal visits by high-ranking delegations from government, parliaments and parties, and to conduct more people-to-people exchanges. Both leaders said they are pleased with the growth of Vietnam–India ties and co-operation since the bilateral relationship was upgraded to a comprehensive strategic partnership in September 2016.
PM Phuc reaffirmed Vietnam’s consistent policy to enhance ties with longtime friends like India. In response, the Indian side said they would continue to support Vietnam through high-quality human resources training, development support packages and preferential credit.
President Kovind lauded Vietnam’s role in strengthening ASEAN–India ties, and cited Vietnam's important role in India’s Act East Policy. He vowed to pursue more efforts to promote the two countries’ partnership based on their 45-year-old relationship.
The ASEAN-India strategic partnership rests on the lasting values created by time-honoured interactions of their cultures and traditions, PM Phuc told the Economic Times of India. The Summit in commemoration of the 25th Anniversary of ASEAN-India Partnership held this month in New Delhi, he added, is a historic milestone that showcases the excellent relationship between the ASEAN and India.
“Trade and investment cooperation should be targeted as the main engine and first priority for the ASEAN-India strategic partnership, and fully tap into the potentials of the two most dynamic economic regions with a population of 1.85 billion people, combined GDP of US$3.8 trillion in 2017, which is the size of the world’s 4th largest economy with the projection to exceed US$8 trillion by 2025. We must effectively implement the agreements on trade and investment in order to unleash the two sides’ inherent potentials,” Phuc was quoted as saying.
ASEAN should undertake comprehensive cooperation with India in various areas on the basis of peace, stability and rule of law in the region and in both the Indian Ocean and Pacific Ocean, as the entire region confronts geo-political tensions, religious extremism, terrorism, climate change, and cyber security, among others, PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc responded to the Economic Times of India.
With the advance of the 4th Industrial Revolution, India as a leading country should forge stronger cooperation with ASEAN in such areas as innovation, connectivity of various industrial sectors and participation in global value chains, which in turn will help create an enabling environment for the development of bilateral ties. Vietnam has been making every effort together with other ASEAN countries to realize the "ASEAN 2025 Vision" in connection with India’s Act East Policy, according to PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc.
Earlier during the day, PM Phuc met with top executives of several leading Indian businesses, namely Tata, Larsen & Toubro (L&T), ONGC and vDoIT.
