Dutch Deputy Minister for Agriculture Marjolijn Sonnema She is leading a trade mission comprising 20 Dutch companies and knowledge institutions to Vietnam from March 20-23 to explore business opportunities.
According to the Dutch Deputy Minister for Agriculture, many Dutch firms are operating in Vietnam and many other Dutch companies and institutions intend to trade foods and exchange knowledge and technology with Vietnam.
Speaking at the meeting, the Vietnamese minister praised the development of agriculture in the Netherlands, which is only as big as the Mekong Delta with a total area of 4 million sq.km but has become a major agriculture products exporter.
Minister Cuong noted that it was a good decision of Vietnam when the two countries became strategic economic development partners in 2014.
He said the selection of food and nutrition security as the focus of bilateral cooperation is in line with the aspiration and suits the potentials and strength of the two nations.
At the event, Chairwoman of TH Milk Food Joint Stock Company Thai Huong expressed her hope that Deputy Minister Marjolijn Sonnema will introduce potential partners to the TH group.
Mr. Nguyen Hong Dien, Chairman of the People's Committee of Thai Binh province, pledged to create favourable conditions for foreign investors and businesses to invest in agriculture in the locality.
He noted that currently about 5 conglomerates have been investing in the province. These big companies have committed to investing in agriculture, from flower production to mechanical engineering for agriculture and seafood, the chairman said.
Thai Binh province expects the Dutch and Vietnamese enterprises will have specific commitments and cooperation to promote agricultural production, especially high-technology agriculture.
For her part, Marjolijn Sonnema pledged to help firms of the two countries meet to strengthen cooperation ties.
Marjolijn Sonnema said that she would appoint a commercial counselor of the Dutch Embassy in Vietnam to attend investment promotion conferences in the agricultural sector in the coming time. The Dutch Ministry of Agriculture will also create best conditions for companies of both countries to meet each other, thus promoting the bilateral cooperation.
In 2014 the two countries signed a Strategic Partnership Arrangement to create a framework for long-term cooperation in Sustainable Agriculture and Food Security.
Bilateral trade is growing steadily. In 2015, Vietnam’s exports increased by 42 percent and imports by 37 percent. The Netherlands is Vietnam’s second largest trade partner and the largest investor in the EU.
