The 5th East Asian Seas Congress kicked off in the central city of Da Nang on November 16, attracting the participation of nearly 700 delegates from both at home and abroad.

The Congress, themed “Global targets, local benefits - Setting the Sustainable Development Agenda for the Seas of East Asia beyond 2015”, looks to build a green economy and sustainable development of natural resources and maritime environment protection in the East Asian seas.
Addressing the opening ceremony, Deputy Prime Minister (PM) Hoang Trung Hai said at present about 50% of world's sea cargos is circulated through East Asian seas on maritime routes linking Europe. Deputy PM Hai affirmed that Vietnam will cooperate with related countries and organisations to maintain the blue colour of the seas and the blue colour of peace for an East Asian region of peace, stability, cooperation and development.
Related parties must boost bilateral and multilateral cooperation in the seas, as well as environmental protection, biodiversity and fishery resources for the sustainable development of marine, coastal and island economy, he said.

Since 2003, the triennial East Asian Seas congress has been organised under the initiative of the Partnerships in Environmental Management for the Seas of East Asia (PEMSEA) with the aim of maintaining the sustainable development of the regional seas.
