Along with 172 countries worldwide in response to the 2016 Earth Hour, Vietnam`s three big cities of Hanoi, HCM City, Da Nang and 60 provinces and cities implemented the symbolic action of turning off unnecessary electrical devices from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. on March 19.
This is the eighth year Vietnam joined the global Earth Hour campaign, which was launched by the Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF) to raise public awareness about efficient energy use in the age of climate change.
In Vietnam, the event was organised by the Ministry of Industry and Trade, WWF and the Danish Embassy.
In Hanoi, lights were switched off around the iconic Hoan Kiem Lake, and other famous destinations including the Ly Thai To flower garden, the Hanoi Opera House and along streets.
Nearly 5,000 people gathered at Hanoi's August Revolution Square to attend the event.
50,000 leaflets, posters and stickers in response to the 2016 Earth Hour were sent by volunteers to local residents. In addition, over 20,000 people pledged to take action in response to the campaign.
Speaking at the ceremony, Vice Chairman of Hanoi People's Committee Nguyen Toan Doan affirmed that Hanoi is the country's leading locality in the implementation of activities in response to Earth Hour campaign.
The Vice Chairman said that Hanoi organised a series of activities in response to the 2016 Earth Hour themed "Small individual action can make a big influence".
Specially, the city has campaigned local organisations, businesses, schools and households to take part in the “lights off” promotion – in which lights and electrical appliances are turned off for one hour from 20:30 to 21:30 on March 19.

The Electricity of Vietnam Group’s National Load Dispatch Centre said Vietnam saved 451,000 kWh of electricity, equivalent to 731.5 million VND from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. on March 19 in response to the 2016 Earth Hour when people across the country turned off unnecessary electrical devices.
