Vietnam still verifying exact whereabouts of Chinese oil rig

A Vietnamese spokesperson said Vietnam and China have the responsibilities of abiding by a bilateral agreement on maritime boundary delimitation in the Gulf of Tonkin.

Vietnamese authorities are checking the information saying that Chinese oil rig Dongfeng is operating in the Gulf of Tonkin, said Vietnam’s Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Le Thi Thu Hang in a press conference on April 10.

Referring to the Sino-Vietnamese Agreement on Maritime Boundary Delimitation in the Gulf of Tonkin, Hang said the agreement clearly defines the scope and jurisdiction of the exclusive economic zone and continental shelf of the signatories in the Tonkin Gulf, in accordance with international laws, including the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.
Vietnam and China have the responsibilities of abiding by the terms of the agreement on the management, exploration and protection of the resources in their respective exclusive economic zone and continental shelf, for the interest of each country and for peace and stability in the East Sea, internationally known as the South China Sea, the spokesperson stressed.
China's state-run Xinhua on April 7 reported that "Dongfang 13-2 CEPB," the second largest offshore oil production and processing platform in China, was completed for shipment at the Gaolan Port in the city of Zhuhai in south China's Guangdong province earlier this month and would be shipped to the Yinggehai Basin of the South China Sea Wednesday.
The platform built by Zhuhai COOEC (China's Offshore Oil Engineering Company)-Fluor Heavy Industries Co. Ltd. is a comprehensive oil and gas processing platform. The floating weight of the platform is 17,247 tonnes, equivalent to the weight of 10,000 ordinary cars, and covers an area of a football field, according to Xinhua.
