Vietnam has ambitions to be among the world’s first countries to launch 5G networks in 2020, with a testing phase expected in 2019.
The Ministry of Information and Communications is about to permit at least one mobile network operator to pilot 5G technology in January 2019, ICTnews.vn reported.
The test will take place in Ho Chi Minh City and the trial period will last from January to May 2019. 5G testing may be performed on the 3.5 GHz band to avoid interference to existing VSAT stations.
Viettel and MobiFone have applied for 5G trial license.
Currently, the Radio Frequency Department is urging operators to complete their application for 5G testing. During the test, the Radio Frequency Department will work with operators to evaluate the 3.5 GHz band.
Viettel’s Deputy General Director Cao Duc Thang said that some countries in the world such as Japan, South Korea and China are expected to deploy 5G in 2019 or 2020.

The benefits of 5G include applications for a series of technologies in the Industrial Revolution 4.0, for connectivity, automation, high-speed transmission, low latency, and solving many limitations of the existing technology.
The launch of 5G will be a huge leap forward in quality for Vietnam’s telecommunications industry, said Information Minister Nguyen Manh Hung at an innovation event in Hanoi in November 2018.
He stressed that 5G is the fifth generation of cellular mobile communications, succeeding the 4G, 3G, and 2G systems. 5G networks will rely on denser arrays of small antennae and the cloud to offer data speeds up to 50 or 100 times faster than current 4G networks and serve as critical infrastructure for a range of industries.
Therefore, Hung said, the 5G network is the most important infrastructure of the Industrial Revolution 4.0, and establishing a developed 5G network should be Vietnam’s top priority if it wants to be at the forefront of this revolution.
