April was the fourth consecutive month when Vietnam received more than one million foreign visitors, up 6.5% over the previous month, according to the General Statistics Office (GSO).
The GSO reported that Vietnam welcomed nearly 4.3 million foreign arrivals in the first four months of this year, an increase of 30.3% over the same period last year. In April, tourists visiting Vietnam by air increased by 8.3% and by road decreased by 16.8%, while the number of visitors taking the sea route surged sharply by 2.2 times due to favourable weather.
Foreign arrivals to Vietnam in April went up by 34% compared with the same period in 2016. Of which, the number of visitors from Asia rose by 38.3%, from Europe it advanced by 31.8%, from America it went up by 12.2%, from Oceania it increased by 12.9% and from Africa it rose by 24.5%, compared with the same month last year.
In the first four months of this year, visitors from Asia reached over 3 million, up 35.3% over the same period last year including more than 1.2 million visitors from China.
Visitors from Europe were estimated at 747,000, up 25.5% over the same period last year, including more than 231,000 from Russia, a sharp increase of 60.3%. Visitors from America reached 315,000, up 11.1% including 228,500 from the US, up 9.1% over the same period last year.
In the meantime, visitors from Oceania were posted at 144,000 in the first four months, up 6% and visitors from Africa was reported at 12,000, up 33.3% over the same period in 2016.
Localities nationwide also welcomed a large number of domestic and foreign visitors during the four days holiday from April 29 to May 2. Hanoi welcomed more than 54,000 foreign visitors, a year-on-year increase of 33% and 235,000 domestic visitors, up 7% over the same period last year.
The northern province of Dien Bien also received tens of thousands of visitors including 20,000 visitors in April 29 and 30 who came to visit historic sites in the Dien Bien Phu Battlefield. Meanwhile, Da Nang received more than 311,300 visitors and Can Tho received 100,000 visitors.
Other localities including Lao Cai, Hai Phong, Quang Ninh, Nghe An, Ha Tinh, Quang Binh, Quang Tri, Hue, Binh Dinh and others also welcomed hundreds of thousands of domestic and foreign visitors, a sharp increase compared with regular days.
