The initiative aims to broaden US technology exports to the region.
Regarding the Indo-Pacific initiative announced by the US recently, Vietnam's foreign ministry affirmed that the mutual goal of all nations is to ensure the peace, stability, cooperation and development in the region and worldwide.
Hence, “Vietnam welcomes initiatives and efforts to connect the region, which contribute to the goal”, said Vietnam’s Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Le Thi Thu Hang in a regular press conference on Thursday.
The participation of Vietnam in the initiative, should ensure the contry's independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity as well as national benefits, she added.
The US has announced it will roll out Indo-Pacific initiative worth US$113 million in new technology, energy and infrastructure initiatives in emerging Asia on Monday.
US President Donald Trump first mentioned the initiative at the APEC Summit 2017 in Da Nang, Vietnam.
Among the new investments outlined by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, the US will invest US$25 million to expand US technology exports to the region, add nearly US$50 million this year to help countries produce and store energy resources and create a new assistance network to boost infrastructure development.
According to Reuters, in a policy speech delivered amid increased US trade frictions with China and other Asian countries, Pompeo sought to define the economic aspect of President Donald Trump’s “Indo-Pacific” strategy, which aims to cast the US as a trustworthy partner in the region.
Pompeo said Washington wants a “free and open” Asia not dominated by any one country, an apparent reference to China’s growing economic clout and heightened tensions in the disputed South China Sea, reported Reuters.
