The country has adopted a development strategy to vigorously promote maritime economy in parallel with protecting maritime environment and ecosystem, said Vietnamese Prime Minister at the G7 Outreach Session on June 9 (Canadian time).
The Outreach Session, within the Group of Seven (G7) Summit, gathered international leaders to evaluate the pollution and unsustainable exploitation in the oceans as global threats, as well as call for international cooperation to tackle the related issues.
At the meeting, international leaders pledged to fulfil the commitments of the Paris Agreement on climate change (COP21). They shared their countries’ visions, opinions and measures to enhance the response ability to climate change, form the mutual mechanisms to reduce plastic pollution at sea, protect the marine ecosystem etc.
Addressing at the meeting, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc affirmed Vietnam highly appreciates Canada – the host nation - focusing on the ocean issue in this year’s event as well as G7 nations showing their will and cooperative spirit in seeking the solutions for protecting the ocean and marine ecology.
According to him, Vietnam, as one of the countries hardest hit by climate change, sea level rise and extreme weather, has been aware of serious threats it is facing. Hence, the country is making efforts to resolve the problems, including fulfil its commitment of cutting greenhouse gas emissions in the Paris Agreement.
Besides, Vietnam highly values the assistance for sustainable development of the Mekong River basin from G7 countries, including Japan, the US and the Friends of the Lower Mekong (FLM).
PM Phuc also highlighted Vietnam's determination to head to sustainable growth, that the country won’t sacrifice the environment for economic benefits. “We encourage clean energy, green growth and sustainable projects while combating strongly polluting waste for blue and healthy seas,” he said.
Also at the meeting, the Vietnamese PM affirmed the support for Canada's initiative on preventing plastic litter on oceans, and stands ready to work with Canada and other partners in its implementation.
For its part, Vietnam proposed that G7 countries consider establishing an Expanded Cooperation Forum of G7 and coastal countries on response to climate change, sea level rise and protection of maritime environment and ecology in order to promote cooperation, share experience, transfer technologies and muster resources.
“At the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Assembly to be held in Vietnam in late June 2018, we will put forward an initiative on developing a Regional Project for a Plastic – Free Ocean, which has been welcomed by the GEF,” PM Phuc added.

PM Phuc said Vietnam welcomes the G7’s support for ASEAN's common stance on the maintaining maritime safety, security and freedom of navigation and overflight, non-militarization and refraining from unilateral acts that would erode trust, dispute settlement via peaceful means on the basis of respecting international law, the 1982 UNCLOS and the diplomatic and legal processes, full and effective observance of the DOC and working towards an early substantive and effective COC.
Over the past 40 years, the G7 has strengthened international economic and security policy, mainstreamed climate change and gender equality, brought donors together and supported disarmament programs. It has been proven to provide the global leadership and play a powerful role in impacting world issues.
This year, the G7 outreach session saw the participation of leaders from G7 economies, European Union and eleven guest nations namely Vietnam, Argentina, Bangladesh, Haiti, Jamaica, Kenya, South Africa, Rwanda, Samoa, Senegal, Seychelles along with other international organizations.
This is the second time that Vietnam has been invited to attend the G7 Outreach Summit, following its participation in 2016 in Japan.
