The number of passenger traffic through Vietnam’s airports in the first half of 2018 was estimated at 52.8 million, a surge of 14% year on year, according to the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV).
Up to 223,000 flights were operated in the period, representing a rise of 10.6% year on year. The volume of cargo through the airports was 726,000 tons, up 9.4% from the same period last year.
Some 35.4 million passengers were transported during the reviewed time, up 16.8% year on year, including 25.1 million carried by Vietnamese carriers, up 15% year on year.
Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV), the operator of 21 civil airports across the country, plans to transport 101.8 million passengers in 2018.
In 2017, Vietnam’s airports served over 94 million passengers, including nearly 13 million foreigners. The number of passengers has surged 17 times from two decades ago to the all-time high in 2017, according to CAAV.
Airports across Vietnam accommodated more than 800,000 safe flights, up 10% from 2016, operated by 67 foreign carriers and four Vietnamese ones in 2017.
The Van Don International Airport in Quang Ninh province is scheduled to receve the first flight in December 2018.
The local authority will submit to PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc for approval on the plan allowing the airport to start opeation in July, according to Sun Group, the investor. This is the first ever airport in the country built by a private investor.
Construction on the airport started in 2015 with total investment of VND7.5 trillion (US$330 million).
