The country has developed more than 20GW over the past 15 years to feed the country`s double-digit annual power demand growth.
Vietnam’s installed power capacity currently hits 53,000MW, ranking second among Southeast Asia countries, behind Indonesia and the 31st all over the world.
The figure was revealed by Deputy Prime Minister Truong Hoa Binh at the inauguration ceremony of Vinh Tan 4 Thermal Power Plant in the central province of Binh Thuan, local media reported.
Vietnam has put into operation more than 40 power plants with capacity of more than 20,000MW over the past 15 years, Binh said on Saturday [September 21].
Vinh Tan 4 thermal power project
Costing an investment of VND36 trillion (US$1.56 billion), Vinh Tan 4 is designed to have a capacity of 1,200MW, generating approximately 7.6 billion kWh of electricity per year.
The Korean Eximbank (KEXIM), the Korea Trade Insurance Corporation (K-Sure), the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) and Nippon Export and Investment Insurance (NEXI) jointly fund 85% of the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract for the project, according to Power Technology.
JBIC granted a loan of US$202.9 million for the thermal power plant, while the Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi (BTMU) granted US$136 million. Meanwhile, JBIC and the BTMU provided funds to EVN for purchasing the main equipment from Mitsubishi and Toshiba for the project.
Invested by Vietnam Electricity (EVN), the plant is built by South Korea’s Doosan Heavy Industry Corporation, Japan’s Mitsubishi Corporation, and Power Engineering Consulting Joint Stock Company 2 (PECC2) and Pacific Group JSC from Vietnam.
Mitsubishi suppled the steam turbine and generator as part of the EPC contract, and Doosan was responsible for the project’s boiler supply and site development.
Power Engineering Consulting Joint Stock Company 3 (EVNPECC3) is acting as the owner’s engineer, while Toshiba Corporation is supplied the steam turbines and generators.
Kicked off in 2014, the supercritical power plant using imported coal is one of projects listed in the Power Development Plan VII for 2011-2020 and vision to 2030.
“Vinh Tan 4 is one of the key projects supplying significant power volume to the country before 2020 and I’m glad to know that the plant has high localization rate and is equipped with advanced technologies, meeting requirements on environment protection, generating and supplying adequate electricity for the South Central region and Southern provinces,” the Deputy PM said in a speech.
