Vietnam’s third-cycle UPR addresses commitment to better protection of human rights
Vietnam has implemented 175 out of the 182 recommendations by the second-cycle Universal Periodic Review (UPR).
Vietnam has promoted the protection of human rights over the past time, a Vietnamese diplomat said at a dialogue session on Vietnam’s national report under the third-cycle UPR of the UN Human Rights Council (HRC) in Geneva, Switzerland, on January 22.
Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Le Hoai Trung said the country has gained remarkable accomplishments in building a law-ruled state, fine-tuning the legal system on human rights, building a facilitating government, improving the efficiency of judicial agencies, promoting the role of socio-political organizations and the press, and increasing international integration.
He added that the report was prepared with the contributions of the Party and state agencies, domestic and international non-governmental organizations, researchers, and individuals.
Vietnam has also ratified the UN’s human rights mechanisms including the Convention against Torture (CAT) and Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), according to the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Vietnam’s UPR session drew 122 countries to review how Vietnam ensures human rights and implements previous UPR recommendations.
The UPR working group is scheduled to meet on January 25 to consider the approval of Vietnam’s report which will be submitted to the HRC for official adoption in June 2019.
Established in 2008, the UPR aims to review the protection and promotion of human rights in all member countries via constructive dialogues.
