Prime Minister (PM) Nguyen Xuan Phuc, Deputy Prime Ministers Vuong Dinh Hue and Vu Duc Dam attended a national conference on tourism development in Hoi An city, central Quang Nam province, on August 9.
Addressing the conference, PM Phuc stressed 3 key elements to develop national tourism industry successfully, including institutional policies, the close coordination of ministries, localities, enterprises, investors and the whole community in boosting tourism, and building trademark tourism.
The PM affirmed the Government’s determination to turn tourism into the country’s spearhead economic sector.
The Government leader noted that by 2020, Vietnam's tourism targets to contribute from 10-20% to the national GDP, gain the revenue of 20 billion USD from tourism, and receive at least 15 million international tourists and 75 million domestic visitors.
He called for the stronger engagement of the whole political system as well as the close coordination of ministries and localities to be combined with creativity and dynamism of enterprises, investors and the whole community in boosting tourism.
PM Phuc pledged that the Government will design policies to support the sector, noting that 200 billion VND has been invested in the launching of electronic visa granting procedure that will commence from January 1, 2017.
Phuc asked the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to issue a code of conduct in tourism, while urging the sector to address a current lack of tour guides, especially those who can speak unpopular foreign languages.
Mentioning the need to build a trademark for the sector, PM Phuc suggested that the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism coordinate closely with other ministries and localities during tourism promotion programmes abroad.
The PM also called for the engagement of media agencies in boosting tourism growth.
The Ministries of Transport, Foreign Affairs, Defence, Public Security and Culture, Sports and Tourism were asked to urgently make a proposal submitted to the Government on the opening of direct flights from nations that are Vietnam's main tourism markets.
PM Phuc instructed the Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs to issue expeditiously national tourism qualifications framework and recognise the national professional standards for tourism and implement the Agreement on mutual recognition of vocational tourism in ASEAN.
Delegates at the event also proposed increasing the number of countries enjoying exemption of visa to Vietnam. The country has exempted visa for tourists from 22 countries and territories, the figure that is modest as regional countries have offered that favourable treatment to 60 to 160 countries and territories.
Participants also stressed the need for closer connections among sectors in bolstering tourism development.
