100% of Hanoi’s residents to have access to clean water by 2030

Hanoi will ensure safe and sustainable water supply to adapt to climate change, so that water supplied to urban and rural areas meets the Ministry of Health’s standards on drinkable water.

Hanoi strives to supply clean water for 100% of population living downtown, in satellite urban areas and rural districts by 2030, Director of the Hanoi Construction Department Le Van Duc said at the Hanoi People's Council’s meeting on July 10.

He noted that in the past time, Hanoi city has seen rapid socio-economic development and urbanization, which lead to increasing demand for clean water.

The demand for water in the time ahead is predicted to grow considerably, so it is necessary to recalculate the water demand and improve the water supply to meet the people’s demand, Duc said, adding that the improvement must be in line with the planning for the capital’s socio-economic development.

Besides, Hanoi will ensure safe and sustainable water supply to adapt to climate change, so that water supplied to urban and rural areas meets the Ministry of Health’s standards on drinkable water.

The whole city’s demand for water is predicted to rise to 2,041 million m3/day in 2020, 2,766 million m3/day in 2030 and 3,393 million m3/day in 2050.

Regarding the adjustment of water use planning, in order to meet the city's water demand in the period to 2030, with the vision to 2050, both surface and underground water sources will be exploited.

However, the purification plants using underground water will see their capacity reduced and be converted into booster pump stations and water reserve in favor of surface water plants. The underground water plants will be phased out from 2050 on.

Surface water sources replacing underground water sources will come from the Da, Red and Duong rivers.

In order to ensure the water supply needs until 2025, it is necessary to prioritize investment projects on plants taking surface water from the Da river, Duong river (phase 2), Red River, and the plants to be built in Xuan Mai and Ba Vi, Duc said.
