Tree planting campaign launched in Hanoi

Each locality in Hanoi will select suitable species to cultivate in the right locations, plant them in appropriate locations and ensure long-term management.

THE HANOI TIMES Hanoi rolled out a mass tree planting campaign on February 22, with the annual spring festival launched simultaneously across 126 communes and wards in tribute to President Ho Chi Minh and in continuation of a long-standing cultural tradition.

The city’s main ceremony was also connected online to four locations nationwide, underscoring broad participation and a shared commitment to building a greener, more civilized and modern capital while strengthening community responsibility toward sustainable development in a new phase of national growth.

Attending the tree planting festival in the suburban ward of Dong Anh, Nguyen Trong Dong, Standing Deputy Secretary of the Hanoi Party Committee, said that the city sets a target to take the lead in green space per capita as this is an important criterion for evaluating citizens' quality of life.

In the first planting campaign this spring, Hanoi aims to plant between 80,000 and 100,000 trees by late March and about 400,000 trees in 2026. These figures are set to rise further.

"Planting trees today is planting seeds of happiness for the future, contributing to Vietnam’s commitments to the international community on net-zero emissions and climate change response," said Dong.

The campaign also helps build a greener, cleaner and more beautiful Hanoi, worthy of its role as the country’s political and administrative center."

He stressed that amid increasingly complex climate change impacts, frequent natural disasters and extreme weather events, tree planting and afforestation have become ever more vital in mitigating disasters and safeguarding the ecological environment.

After 66 years, the movement has become a nationwide spring tradition. Planting one more tree means placing greater confidence in the future and raising public awareness of environmental protection.
