Hanoi enhances urban hygiene standards ahead of Tet

The goal is to ensure that residents welcome the Lunar New Year joyfully while managing safe and orderly environment citywide during the peak period.

THE HANOI TIMES — Hanoi has launched a comprehensive campaign to strengthen environmental sanitation and urban order ahead of the 2026 Lunar New Year, focusing on cleaning public spaces, improving waste management and dismantling makeshift markets.

According to Bui Duy Cuong, Director of the municipal Department of Agriculture and Environment, Hanoi is deploying sanitation forces to maintain clean streets before, during and after Tet, while expanding the use of advanced equipment such as vacuum trucks and high-pressure washers citywide.

In late 2025, the Hanoi People’s Committee issued a directive to strengthen environmental hygiene and urban aesthetics under the “Bright - Green - Clean - Beautiful” movement, and the city plans to complete the restructuring of waste service contracts in the first quarter of 2026 to ensure uninterrupted services.

Colonel Dao Van Nhan, Commander of the Capital High Command, said police and relevant forces will coordinate to enforce sanitation regulations and ensure safety on Lunar New Year’s Eve (February 16), when fireworks displays are scheduled at 34 venues across 33 wards.

The Hanoi Capital Command has prepared fireworks launchers for 34 venues, including 11 aerial and 23 ground displays lasting 15 minutes from midnight to 0:15 AM. The force has coordinated with police and firefighting units to ensure security, order and safety, and has trained personnel to comply with technical standards.

Traffic police will set up 66 checkpoints and deploy officers at key locations to prevent congestion, particularly around transport hubs. Fire prevention forces will provide vehicles and equipment for the display sites, while hospitals and medical centers have been assigned to stand by at all fireworks venues.

The Hanoi People’s Committee has established a Tet holiday hotline (0965404557).

The 2026 Lunar New Year holiday will run from February 14 to February 22.
