2015 - special year for US-Vietnam relations

Daniel Russel, US Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs, has highlighted 2015 as a special year for the US-Vietnam ties as it marks 20 years of diplomatic relations between the two nations.

His remark came at a September 17 ceremony marking Vietnam’s 70th National Day hosted by the Vietnam Embassy in the US.

The US diplomat hailed the tremendous achievements Vietnam has recorded over the past two decades, saying both nations have overcome differences, built a close and trusted relationship and cooperation across a variety of fields from economy, trade and education to health care and environmental protection.

He expressed his conviction that with its great potential, Vietnam will obtain even greater achievements and the US-Vietnam comprehensive partnership will grow and flourish in the time ahead.

Echoing Daniel Russel’s views, Vietnamese Ambassador to the US Pham Quang Vinh said 2015 is an important milestone elevating bilateral ties to a higher level.

Party Chief Nguyen Phu Trong’s recent historical visit to the US and the Vietnam-US Declaration of the Joint Vision have deepened the two countries’ comprehensive partnership and opened up opportunities for comprehensive cooperation on the basis of equality, mutual respect and mutual benefit, he said.

The ambassador said he believes that economic and trade cooperation will expand further, particularly when the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) Agreement comes into effect.

Two-way trade between the two countries has posted  a 20% increase year-on-year over the past two decades and the figure is expected to reach US$40 billion this year.
