20th Vietnam Film Festival to be held in Da Nang

The best cinematic works and individuals that stood out in the industry this year will be honored at the 20th Vietnam Film Festival, which is scheduled from November 24 to 28 in the central coastal city of Da Nang.

Speaking at a press conference on October 19, Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Vuong Duy Bien said that the festival will introduce 16 feature films, 26 documentaries, 17 scientific films and 18 animated films, which were produced and released over the past two years.
The best entry will be awarded the Golden Lotus, followed by the Silver Lotus and the Special Jury Prize. The best director, scriptwriter, cameraman, and leading actors and actresses will also be honored on the occasion.
As this year’s film festival is part of the activities to celebrate the 50th founding anniversary of ASEAN, the ASEAN Film Award will be launched featuring 10 movies in the region with the best film being awarded up to US$ 3,000.
There will also be two seminars on reviewing the Vietnam Film Festivals and on seeking ways in which to promote ASEAN cinema to the world.
The Vietnam Film Festival founded in 1970, is a film festival of Vietnam. It is considered as the major event of Cinema of Vietnam with awards for numerous categories ranging from the feature film, direct-to-video to documentary film. The festival is held for each two or three years in different host cities all over Vietnam with the latest was organized in 2007 in the city of Nam Dinh. It has provided a venue for artists, managers, film producers and distributors to exchange their experiences and find ways to boost Vietnam’s cinema development.
The first Vietnam Film Festival was held from August 18 to August 25, 1970 in Hanoi following an issue of Vietnamese Ministry of Culture with the purpose of "encouraging the development of the national cinema".
For each festival, there are several juries of 7 to 11 members for different categories of feature film, direct-to-video, animated film and documentary film. The most prestigious prize of the festival is the Golden Lotus following by the Silver Lotus and the Special Prize of Jury. Up to 2007, there are 15 festival which took place in numerous cities of Vietnam with the 16th festival will be held in Ho Chi Minh City in December 2009.
