Bird flu has been temporarily contained, with no new hotbeds of the disease detected in the country for the past two weeks, heard a press conference in Hanoi on April 1.
According to a report released by the Animal Health Department (AHD) under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, only 13 hotbeds of bird flu in five provinces remain, namely Ha Giang, Khanh Hoa, Vinh Long, Binh Thuan and Ben Tre. The total number of culled poultry has to date hit nearly 15,000.
The National Steering Committee on Avian Flu Control noted the majority of cases of bird flu were recorded in southern provinces and cities while the development of the avian influenza was complicated due to new virus strains.

The committee required that a programme on monitoring the H7N9 situation, funded by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), should continue to be implemented, adding that it is vital to enhance local animal health agencies’ capacity in conducting virus strain tests.
AHD deputy head Dam Xuan Thanh said there is still a high risk of bird flu spreading, asking the localities to continue the disinfection to halt the spread of the virus.
Vietnam has reported no human H7N9 cases to date, noted a representative from the Ministry of Health, adding that preventive measures continue to keep the strain from entering the country.
