Dancing through cultures: Hanoi celebrates the 12th Night of Latin American Music

The 12th Night of Latin American Music celebrated the vibrant cultures of Latin America, uniting Vietnam and the region through music, dance and heartfelt connections.

As Jorge Luis swayed to the melody of a familiar Cuban folk song, memories of home washed over him. Nearby, Vietnamese students clapped along enthusiastically, their smiles reflecting the joy of connection. Across the ballroom, the vibrant beats of the cha-cha-cha filled the air, uniting guests in a celebration of shared culture and friendship.

The sounds and rhythms of Latin music filled the Victory Hotel in Hanoi on December 15 as the 12th Latin American Music Night, a highly anticipated annual event, once again bridged continents and brought together over 200 guests, including diplomats, students and cultural enthusiasts.

Organized by the Hanoi Union of Friendship Organizations in cooperation with the Vietnam-Cuba Friendship Association and Latin American embassies, the event celebrated the enduring bond between Vietnam and the Latin American region through music, dance and camaraderie.

The evening opened with a warm welcome from Nguyen Ngoc Ky, Chairman of the Hanoi Union of Friendship Organizations. "This night of music not only showcases the cultural beauty of our friends, but also reinforces the strong ties between Vietnam and Latin American countries," he said. "It is an opportunity to reflect on a meaningful year of people-to-people diplomacy and look forward to new encounters in the coming year."

His words set the tone for the event, which seamlessly blended entertainment with cultural exchange, creating a space where guests could experience the pulsating vibrancy of Latin America while building meaningful relationships.

For Jorge Luis, a Cuban exchange student at the Vietnam Academy of Cryptography Techniques, the night was both a celebration and a homecoming. "Listening to traditional songs and seeing my fellow Cubans brought me back to my family and my homeland," he said. "I missed home, but I was also very happy to promote our culture here in Vietnam, so it was a bittersweet experience. One of the highlights was sharing stories and conversing with friends in Spanish.  This event deepened my love for the country because it shows how much the Vietnamese people value diversity and connectedness."

For the Vietnamese, the event provided a unique window into a rich and diverse culture. Mai, a student at the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam, described the experience as both educational and rewarding. "It was fascinating and enriching. The program gave us a brighter and more vivid perspective of Cuba. It felt both fresh and familiar; Cuba has always been close to my heart through childhood stories and historical narratives. This event added a cultural and artistic lens that helped me understand the people and their warmth even more," she said.

Phuong Nhi, a Spanish major at Hanoi University, saw the event as a rare opportunity to immerse herself in a Latin American atmosphere. "Despite the cold weather, the event spread warmth," she said. "It was a chance to apply what I've learned in class: language, culture, and traditions in a real setting. If I could contribute, I'd add interactive games like quizzes to make the exchange even more engaging. But the dances, the energy, and the sense of connection were unforgettable."

The night's performances were a feast for the senses, each act a tribute to the artistry of Latin America. From the sultry rhythms of the tango to the lively steps of the cha-cha, the stage came alive with energy and passion. A standout moment was the "Hey Hola" mashup, a collaborative performance featuring artists from embassies, friendship organizations and local universities.

The program also included unique contributions from the participating embassies, which showcased not only music and dance, but also culinary delights. Guests enjoyed traditional foods and beverages from Cuba, Argentina and other countries, adding another layer of cultural immersion to the experience.

The event was a collaborative effort involving the Hanoi Union of Friendship Organizations, the Vietnam-Cuba Friendship Association, and embassies from across the Latin American region. Together, they curated a program that reflected both the diversity and unity of Latin American culture, ensuring an evening that was as meaningful as it was entertaining.

As the official program came to a close, the dance floor opened to all, transforming the formal setting into a lively celebration. Diplomats, students, and guests joined hands, swaying and spinning to the rhythms of Latin music. The energy was contagious, breaking down barriers and creating connections that transcended language and geography.

For many, the night was a reminder of the unifying power of art and music. H.E. Marcos A. Bednarski, Ambassador of Argentina to Vietnam, summed it up best: "This event is a clear testimony to the warmth and mutual appreciation between our regions. It is a bridge that   continues to bring us closer."

As the function drew to a close, the 12th Night of Latin American Music left behind more than just memories. It was a celebration of shared humanity, a testament to the value of cultural exchange, and a promise of stronger ties between Vietnam and Latin America.

For Jorge Luis, the event captured a sense of belonging that transcends borders. "Tonight, I felt like I was dancing between two worlds - my Cuba and my Vietnam. And for that moment, they were one."
