To Lich River’s revival reshapes Hanoi urban life

The transformation of the To Lich River goes beyond environmental restoration, reflecting Hanoi’s broader drive to build a cleaner, more livable and better-connected city.

THE HANOI TIMES Environmental upgrades are turning the To Lich River from one of Hanoi’s most polluted waterways into a cleaner, greener public space.

The overhaul follows comprehensive measures to rehabilitate the river and upgrade surrounding areas under the Project to Renovate, Beautify and Reconstruct Parks along both sides of the To Lich River, launched in December 2025.

The initiative is among 234 projects set for groundbreaking or inauguration nationwide ahead of the 14th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam on January 19-23, 2026.

Developed and funded by Sun Group with a total investment of more than VND4.6 trillion (US$186 million), the project aims to revive the historic waterway and create a new cultural landmark for Hanoi.

Renovation is in its final stage. The once-polluted water is visibly clearer, and rebuilt embankments with wide pedestrian walkways have improved the surrounding residential landscape.

Water levels are stabilized by a dam system, supporting improved flow and enhancing the landscape.

The To Lich River now receives water from West Lake, creating a more continuous and stable current.

A pumping system operates continuously at the downstream dam.

The water surface near the dam mirrors the surrounding scenery, forming a vivid focal point in the heart of the city.

Flowers bloom along the riverbanks, adding color to the renewed public space.

The lower section of the To Lich River reflects Hanoi’s push toward a more modern, environmentally sustainable urban image.

The embankment system has been comprehensively upgraded to enhance safety and urban aesthetics.

Residents stroll along the river, embracing the improved environment and revitalized public space.
