Deputy PM orders conduct the pre-feasibility study report of North - South high-speed railway project

Deputy PM Trinh Dinh Dung has ordered the Ministry of Transport and Communication to conduct the pre-feasibility study report of the North - South high-speed railway project in order to submit to the National assembly.

In addition, the Ministries of Planning and Investment, Finance, Natural Resources and Environment are requested to coordinate with the Ministry of Transport and Communication to accelerate the compilation and assessment of the report and submit to relevant authorities.

The Prime Minister granted approval for the adjustment of the Vietnam railway development strategy until 2020 with vision to 2050 to meet the increasing demand for transportation and enhance connection of big cities across the nation.
From now to 2020, the Ministry of Transport and Communication will research the construction of a new high-speed rail route with double-track rail line using standard gauge of 1,435 mm. In addition, electrified,  and prepare necessary conditions for the construction of some sections with great transport demand like Hanoi - Vinh (Nghe An province), and Ho Chi Minh City - Nha Trang (Khanh Hoa province).
Earlier, developers have also suggested using Japan's Shinkansen bullet train technology to significantly reduce travel time.
The first stage of the standard-gauge double-track railway will be built from 2020 to 2030, with operational speeds of 160 to 200 kilometers per hour. Officials hope the entire North-South line will be finished by 2050 and achieve speeds of 350 kilometers per hour. This could eventually cut down travel time between Hanoi and Saigon to below eight hours compared to some 30 hours like right now.
The project was proposed in 2007 and later rejected due to high cost, but then re-established in 2010. The north-to-south railway is currently the country’s principal railway line spanning a total length of 1,726 kilometers from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City. The railway network was put into operation in 1936 and is operated by the state-owned Vietnam Railways.
