Earthquake jolts Son La, no casualties

A 4-magnitude earthquake rattled Muong La district, the northern mountainous Son La province on the morning of August 20.

The National Earthquake and Tsunami Warning Centre under the Institute of Geophysics reported that the quake struck Muong La at around 6:50am (local time) at a depth of about 10km.

There have been no reports on casualties. The Institute of Geophysics is strictly monitoring the disaster.
This is the fifth earthquake that has hit Muong La district for the past month and the ninth since the beginning of this year.
On July 19, three earthquakes measuring above 3 on the Richter scale shook Muong La district. The strongest, 4.3 magnitude, caused subsequent aftershocks and people living in high-rise buildings in Hanoi capital even felt tremors.
Hearing the news, Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai asked the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment to study possible links between earthquakes and climate change.
“Earthquakes have occurred more frequently in recent times, and we should have proper forecasts and solutions for dealing with the disaster,” he told an online conference on flash floods and landslides prevention in Hanoi on August 20.
