East Sea tensions to be debated at SOM ASEAN

The recent tensions in the East Sea will be examined at the upcoming ASEAN Senior Officials Meeting (SOM) and SOM ASEAN+3 to take place in Myanmar from June 6-10.

The information was revealed by Foreign Ministry spokesperson Le Hai Binh at an international press conference in Hanoi on June 5, briefing local and foreign reporters on the latest developments in the East Sea.

He said maintaining peace, stability and security, and maritime safety in the region is the interest and responsibility of all parties concerned in the region and beyond.
All issues affecting peace, security, stability and maritime safety in the region will be discussed at regional meetings, including the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting and the ASEAN Leaders’ Summit.
Concerns about increased tensions in the East Sea will be also tabled for discussion, he said.
Besides the SOM ASEAN, and SOM ASEAN + 3 (China, Japan and the Republic of Korea), a number of other meetings will be held in preparation for the upcoming East Asia Summit (EAS), ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, and the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF).
The Vietnamese delegation to these meetings will be led by Deputy Foreign Minister Pham Quang Vinh.
