Vietnam will host the 5th Asian Beach Games (ABG) slated for September 24-October 3 in the central province of Da Nang toward free from cigarette, according to the Games organising board.
Vietnam in general and the central city of Da Nang in particular are trying their best efforts to make the fifth Asian Beach Games (ABG) successful and free from cigarette, said Director of the General Department of Sports and Physical Training Vuong Bich Thang at an international media conference in Hanoi on August 31.
Accordingly, all athletes, coaches, referees, officials and volunteers are not allowed to smoke in public areas as well as while on duty, he said.
Director of the General Department of Sports and Physical Training Vuong Bich Thang, who is also deputy head of the Games organising board, noted that organisations and individuals are asked to not advertise and market cigarette in any form and use the images of cigarette on publications of the Games.
According to the organising board, the ABG 2016 will attract the participation of around 2,500 athletes from 42 countries and territories to compete for 172 sets of medals in 14 sports with 22 events.
The board said it has completed draft rules of 22 sports at the tournament, outlined scenarios of flag hoisting ceremonies of the participating countries and set up a press centre, among others.
Beside preparing athletes for the games, the host country is stepping up efforts to train referees, disseminate competition rules and ensure security for the event.
The opening ceremony, closing ceremony and competitions of four sports - beach football, beach volleyball, beach handball and beach sepak takraw - will be televised.
The East Sea Park, My Khe beach, Phuong Trang urban beach and Son Thuy seaside resort have been selected to be competition venues of this year’s Games.
The ABG, a biennial event first held in 2008 in Bali, Indonesia, is one of big sports events in Asia established by the Olympic Council of Asia.
