With the expansion, Noi Bai International Airport will be able to serve 100 million passengers a year by 2030.
ADP Ingénierie (ADPi), a French company specializing in design and building airports all over the world, has been awarded a contract for a study to raise the capacity of Noi Bai International Airport on the outskirts of Hanoi.
Under the one-year project signed in Hanoi on April 24, ADPi will cover the adjustments to the detailed upgrade plan to make Noi Bai airport capable of handling between 80 and 100 million passengers per year by 2030, the Vietnam News Agency has reported.
The contract was signed following the French government’s approval of a grant worth EUR564,000 (US$629,000) made in October 2018 to the government of Vietnam.
Noi Bai International Airport has been planned to serve 25 million passengers and more than 260,000 tons of cargo per year by 2020. The figure would be 50 million and 500,000 tons of goods/year after 2030.
In 2018, the airport showed signs of being overloaded with downgraded infrastructure, mostly runways and taxiways.
Noi Bai International Airport was listed among 100 best global airports in 2016, 2017 and 2018 by international air transport rating organization Skytrax.
ADPi's projects in Vietnam
Being one of the five largest airport engineering companies in the world, ADPi has also conducted the feasibility study for Long Thanh International Airport project which is located in Vietnam’s southern province of Dong Nai, about 40km from Ho Chi Minh City.
The project began in August 2018 with airport planning expertise, ancillary building design, knowledge of the airport operations sharing with stakeholders, and in-house multidisciplinary skills.
The company will offer development scenarios by phases with a strategy for the connection between the existing and new airports. The design will be made for a green-field airport with a capacity of 25 million passengers/year for the first phase and ultimate capacity of 100 million passengers/year.
In 2017, ADPi was also chosen to adjust the planning of Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City, which is also being overloaded.
ADPi is diversifying its development zones by expanding towards strong-growth regions like China and Southeast Asia besides Europe, the Middle East, Latin America, and Africa.
Vietnam’s aviation growth
Vietnam’s aviation industry is reckoned to be the world’s five fastest-growing markets by the International Air Transport Association (IATA).
Indeed, the growth of tourism industry has resulted in the stronger presence of international airlines.
As a result, Vietnam is the fastest-growing aviation market in terms of passengers in the 2016-2040 period, according to the Airports Council International (ACI).
The number of foreign visitors to Vietnam grows 20% on average annually, reaching roughly 15.5 million in 2018.
To meet such traveling demand, local airlines have been seeking to expand their airplane fleets and networks, putting great pressure on infrastructure at Vietnamese airports.
Vietnam currently has five airlines, including national carrier Vietnam Airlines, budget operator Jetstar Pacific Airlines, budget carrier Vietjet Aviation, Vietnam Air Services (VASCO) and the startup carrier Bamboo Airways, which launched the first commercial flight in January.
