Hanoi high-school students win eight medals at Int’l Olympiad of Metropolises

The competition this year was held online due to Covid-19.

Eight Vietnamese students from Hanoi-Amsterdam High School for the Gifted have brought home five gold, one silver, and two bronze medals at the fifth International Olympiad of Metropolises (IOM).

The competition, organized by the Mayor of Moscow, was held on December 16-22 online due to impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Gold medals went to Nguyen Hoang Nam and Tran Quang Vinh in Physics, Nguyen Duy Anh and Nguyen Le Thao Anh in Chemistry, and Do Bach Khoa in Mathematics.

Besides, Nguyen Duc Anh won the silver medal in Mathematics, while Nguyen Gia Bao and Nguyen Anh Quan won two bronze medals in Informatics.

Especially, the team from Vietnam won the silver cup and ranks in top five best cities in the category of blitz-contest.

Last year, Vietnam achieved impressive results in their first-time participation in the fourth IOM, bagging three golds, three silvers, and two bronzes.

The IOM is an international team contest, which is held in Moscow annually at the initiative of the Mayor of Russia’s capital city. Students who participate in the contest are 14-18 year old dwellers of the world’s largest metropolises. A team of eight participants represents each city. They are to show their knowledge of Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Informatics. The competition consists of a blitz-contest and two main rounds.

First held in 2016, after four years, the competition has been extended with contestants of 45 cities from 32 countries and territories such as Helsinki, Moscow, St. Petersburg, Berlin, Dresden, Frankfurt, Boston, New York, Beijing, Hanoi, among others.
