Leaders of Hanoi must be iron-willed and work with methodological approaches and unity, the president said at a meeting with voters in Hanoi on October 14 before a semi-annual parliament meeting scheduled to convene later this month.

He expected that the Hanoi Party Committee will be determined to fulfil the targets set in the resolution adopted at its once-in-five-year congress concluded earlier this week to make Hanoi an exemplary locality of Vietnam.

The Party chief said Hanoi has been criticized for long-stalled infrastructure projects and long-lasting problems such as the wastewater treatment project for the To Lich river, Soc Son garbage treatment dump, urban railways, violations in construction, and site clearance.

However, he said there should be some sympathy toward Hanoi’s authorities because urban management in Hanoi is a tough job as the capital city is home to a large number of central agencies, institutes, universities, embassies and habitants.

At the meeting, voters in Hanoi warned of unqualified state cadres and vested interests in the political system.

Voter Do Ba Quat in Hoan Kiem district raised the necessity to remove from the organizations officials who are thirsty for power.

Voter Nguyen Quyet Thang in Hoan Kiem district complained about officials’ legal violations, saying that the personnel issues must be put the first and foremost.

In the past two years, top leaders of the Hanoi city government have been punished for their mismanagement.

In August 2020, Chairman of the Hanoi People’s Committee Nguyen Duc Chung was arrested for his involvement in several criminal cases.

In January 2020, Secretary of the Hanoi Party Committee Hoang Trung Hai was disciplined for involving in a steel project with Chinese funding.
