Hanoi city and the whole country will implement the anti-plastic waste movement to preserve and protect the environment.
Hanoi’s authority will focus on rolling out five major solutions to combat plastic waste, Chairman of the Hanoi People's Committee Nguyen Duc Chung said at the launching ceremony for the national campaign against plastic waste on June 9.
Chung listed the capital’s five major solutions to combat plastic waste as follows:
First, Hanoi will have all the enterprises in the city sign a commitment against plastic waste in the field of industrial production and product distribution with a view to achieving the phasing out of plastic bags at all commercial centers and supermarkets by December 31, 2020.
Second, the city’s authority will find proper ways of communication so as to raise the understanding about the harm of plastic items and single-use plastic bags towards the environment and human health. Besides, Hanoi will encourage manufacturers and distributors to join hands in environmental protection, from production to consumption of environmentally-friendly products in the city.
Third, the city will elaborate and improve policies to support introduction and consumption of environmentally-friendly products such as packages and bags; put enterprises in the field of plastic recycling and production of environmentally-friendly bags in the portfolio to call for investment.
Fourth, Hanoi will promote infrastructure development, services of collecting and recycling plastic waste and plastic bags that are difficult to decompose to make them useful and environmentally-friendly; implement measures to classify waste at source.
Fifth, the city will study policies on supporting plastic bag producers to switch to producing cloth and paper bags and a policy to stop the habit of using plastic bags.
With the above-mentioned practical actions, the mayor of the Hanoi People's Committee believes that the capital and the whole country will successfully and effectively implement the anti-plastic waste movement to preserve and protect the environment.
