Hanoi students bag gold medals at Asian Physics Olympiad

One of the two Hanoi students achieved the highest score at the contest, making him the first Vietnamese students to earn such achievement.

Two Hanoi 12th graders from Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted pocketed gold medals at Asian Physics Olympiad (APhO), announced the Ministry of Education and Training (MoET) on May 23.

The two gold medalists are Nguyen Manh Quan and Tran Quang Vinh. Notably, Quan received the APhO President’s certificate of merit for recording the highest score at the event, making him the first Vietnamese students to earn the achievement.

The eight Vietnamese students who participated in the APhO 2021 brought home medals, including two gold, one silver, three bronze, and two certificates of merit, the MoET said.

The silver medal went to Bui Thanh Tan from Phan Boi Chau High School for the Gifted in the north-central province of Nghe An.

Bronze medals were awarded to Nguyen Trong Thuan from the Lam Son High School for the Gifted in the north-central province of Thanh Hoa, Le Minh Hoang from the Hanoi University of Science (HUS)’s High School for Gifted Students, and Nguyen Hoang Nam from the Hanoi - Amsterdam Specialized High School.

Trang Dao Cong Minh from the HUS’s High School for Gifted Students and Nguyen Dac Tien from the Bac Ninh High School for the Gifted in the northern province of Bac Ninh received certificates of merit.

Hosted by Taiwan (China), the APhO 2021 was originally scheduled to be held in 2020 but due to the Covid-19 pandemic, it was postponed to this year and eventually took place online.

The online competition drew 181 contestants from 23 countries and territories. In Vietnam, it was held online at the Hanoi National University of Education from May 16 to 24, during which contestants must complete theory and practical examinations under the supervision of two Taiwanese experts.

The closing ceremony in the form of a videoconference took place at 12:00 pm on Monday.
