The capital city held a ceremony on February 4 to launch the annual tree planting festival, which has become a custom practiced whenever a new year comes, at the southern intersection of Nhat Tan bridge in Phu Thuong ward, Tay Ho district.
Attending the ceremony were Politburo member and Secretary of Hanoi Party Committee Hoang Trung Hai, Chairman of the municipal People's Committee Nguyen Duc Chung, Chairman of the municipal People's Council Nguyen Thi Bich Ngoc, and numerous Ambassadors of foreign countries and international organizations in Vietnam.
On November 28, 1959, the Nhan dan (People) newspaper published an article entitled “Tree planting festival” written by the President Ho Chi Minh. The article analysed the importance of planting trees to the country and each people and called for all people’s engagement in the work.
Since then, the tree planting festival has become a custom practiced whenever a new year comes. Tree planting and afforestation activities have been implemented in a widespread and effective manner.
Speaking at the event, Hanoi Party Secretary Hoang Trung Hai highlighted that the city has carried out effectively tree planting and afforestation activities under the teachings of President Ho Chi Minh so as to create an image of a green, clean and beautiful capital.
Hanoi will focus on mobilising all social resources to gradually actualize the plan of growing one million new trees by 2020, the secretary added.
Secretary Hoang Trung Hai stressed the care and protection of trees should be done with the planting.
He also described forest planting and protection as increasingly important amidst global climate change, and stressed that concrete and practical solutions should be taken to prevent deforestation in order to fuel economic growth and improve living standards of pepple in the country in general and the city in particular.
According to the Secretary Hai, the city has determined the planting and protecting of trees as the most important task of all levels and sectors.
The party committees, governments must have a plan for land afforestation planning, contributing to beautify the landscape and protect ecological environment amidst global climate change, he stressed.
Secretary Hai also emphasied active organisation of annual tree planting festivals in the city’s districts, wards and commmunes, adding that the local’s social and political organizations should propose mechanisms and policies to mobilize investment funds for tree planting and afforestation, and encourage people and businesses to participate in the works.
Addressing the ceremony, Chairman Nguyen Duc Chung said in 2016, Hanoi paid a special attention for the improvement and development of trees, focused on planting urban green trees.
The city’s units have planted more than 210,000 trees of all kinds at traffic islands, median strips, roads and streets. Hanoi planted about 85,000 new trees on highways, highway landscaping, environment with a total of about 85 thousand trees.
In an attempt to bolster its eco-friendly image, Hanoi has started to beautify its major streets with flamboyant trees, Chairman Chung said.
As many as 300 flamboyant trees have been planted on the median strips of major streets in Hanoi such as Tran Khat Chan, Xa Dan, Kim Lien-Hoang Cau, Lang Ha and Tay Son. The planting of flamboyant trees is part of a bigger plan to beautify the city by growing one million new trees by 2020.
The Chairman stressed that the year 2017 plays a key role in creating the premise to fulfill Hanoi’s socio-economic development objectives in the period 2016-2020, especially the target of planting one million trees and joining hands to build Hanoi towards a green, clean and beautiful city.
After the launching ceremony, Chairman Chung requested authorities of districts and towns to implement expeditiously the guidance of the municipal Party Committee and People’s Committee, striving to plant more than 430,000 trees of all kinds this year.

Making his speech at the ceremony, Secretary of the municipal Party Committee Hoang Trung Hai recalled that 57 years ago, President Ho Chi Minh planted trees at the local Thong Nhat park, since then making the activity a green festival of the entire nation every Spring.
