Hanoi to crease effort to ensure traffic safety

Deputy Prime Minister Truong Hoa Binh has recently presided over a tele-conference to review traffic safety and order in the first quarter of this year and roll out tasks for the second quarter of 2017. According to a report by the National Traffic Safety, in January – February period, the country has seen 3,465 traffic accidents killing 1,570 people and injuring 2,660 others. Those figures respectively declined by 153, 20 and 707 from 2016.

Regarding traffic congestion, in the first two months of 2017, ministries, sectors and localities have concentrated on implementing many solutions to reduce traffic jams on major transport axes, in urban areas, especially in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.

Addressing the conference, Vice Chairman of the Viet Nam National Safety Traffic Committee Khuat Viet Hung said that the falling trend was unsustainable and traffic accident losses were still big. Congestion in crowded urban areas and key national roads remained a big problem threatening traffic order and safety, especially in big cities due to there has been no regulation stipulating the leaders’ responsibility and traffic police who are in duty to keep traffic safety. Moreover, some traffic police officers committed corruption to tolerate violations.

In the second quarter of this year, ministries, sectors, localities should continue effectively implementing Directive No. 18 of the Secretariat of the Party Central Committee; Resolution No. 88 of the Government and Plan No. 08 of the Traffic Safety Committee to lower the number of traffic accidents and the resulting deaths and injuries in 2017 by 5-10 percent each compared to those of last year and at least 5 percent for serious railway, inland waterway and coach accidents.

Speaking at the Hanoi point, Vice Chairman Hung said that in the first two months of this year, the number of traffic accidents dropped in all 3 criteria (number of cases, deaths and injuries). The city has seen 277 traffic accidents killing 90 people and injuring 177 others. Those figures respectively declined by 8, 7 and 33 from 2016.

Speaking at the conference, Deputy Prime Minister Truong Hoa Binh called for greater efforts to ease traffic jams and prevent serious traffic accidents. “Localities nationwide have been asked to closely monitor the operation of transport companies specializing in road and internal waterways, especially passenger services,” he added.
