Identifying the treatment of environmental pollution in lakes as an urgent issue, since the beginning of 2010, Hanoi has launched socialization campaigns on protecting, renovating lakes in the inner city, drawing the positive respond of the community. Implementing the policy, the Municipal Department of Natural Resource and Environment has cooperated with inter-sectorial delegations, scientists to select appropriate technologies to test water pollution treatment in lakes with high pollution levels, such as: Ngoc Khanh, Xa Dan, Hai Ba Trung, Kim Lien, etc.

In 2015, the city handled over 12 cleaned lakes to relevant units to manage, maintain the water quality. In 2016, Hanoi Sewerage and Drainage Limited Company has deployed the project “Testing water treatment by Redoxy-3 in some lakes in Hanoi”, and then used the chemical in treating, maintaining the water quality.

In addition, Hanoi People’s Committee has focused on dredging, creating landscapes around lakes through the project “Improving lake environment in the inner city”. To further protect lake environment, localities having lakes will strengthen communication, popularization to raise the awareness, responsibility of local authorities, people; take specific regulations in protecting lake environment. Over the past years, Hanoi Department of Natural Resource and Environment has jointly introduced a program on treating lakes to build communicators, contributing to protecting lake environment in the city.

On the frame of the cooperative program on protecting lake environment in Hanoi, Head of Environmental Policy Division (Fukuoka Environment Department-Japan) Kai Hideo shared experiences in environmental protection of lakes in Fukuoka, such as: drawing people’s participation; strengthening communication; strictly handling violation cases; effectively treating environmental pollution, etc.

Thanks to the training course, the Municipal Veterans Association highly appreciated Japan’s experiences. The association will deploy environmental protection of lakes to all its members in the coming time.

Together with Hanoi, Vietnam asserts role in ASEAN cooperation in environment. Vietnam’s participation in ASEAN cooperation in the environment has clearly demonstrated the country’s proactive, active and responsible integration into the world.

General Director of the Vietnam Environment Administration Nguyen Van Tai made the remark at a workshop on January 6 reviewing 20 years of Vietnam’s engagement in the ASEAN environmental cooperation.

Since its foundation, the Vietnam office of the ASEAN Senior Officials on the Environment (ASOEN) has actively taken part in all spheres of environmental cooperation such as biodiversity, climate change, chemicals and waste, marine environment and coastal zone, environmental technology, environmental education, trans-boundary haze pollution control, water resources management, and sustainable production and consumption.

For over 20 years, Vietnam has established itself in different fields of cooperation, including environment, Tai said, noting that through ASEAN cooperation, countries in the region and the world have gained a better understanding of Vietnam’s foreign policy and Doi moi (renewal) attainments.

At the same time, the country has also had chances to exchange experience, access scientific and technological advances, improve its capacity and proactively suggest initiatives in order to promote win-win cooperation, he added.

As ASEAN is building and implementing the targets of the ASEAN Community by 2025 across the three pillars of politics-security, economy and culture-society, cooperation within ASEAN and between the bloc and its partners will be further expanded.
