Hanoi to launch nine more electric bus lines

The city is determined to build a green public transport network in line with its commitment to environmental protection.

Hanoi's Department of Transport has proposed to the municipal People's Committee that nine additional intra-city and inter-provincial electric bus routes be piloted.

Electric buses will be put into operation to replace diesel ones on the following bus lines, including Bus No.5 with a route from Linh Dam urban area to Phu Dien and vice versa; Bus No.15 from Gia Lam train station to Ni Street in Soc Son suburban district; Bus No.17 from Long Bien residential area to Noi Bai Airport; and others.

According to Hanoi's roadmap, the proportion of vehicles using electricity and green energy will reach at least 50% by 2030, and 100% of buses and taxis will use electricity and green energy by 2050.

Hanoi Transport Corporation believes that the use of clean energy is an inevitable trend in transportation in Vietnam and the world. The adoption of green technology in public transportation is emerging as a key measure to curb fossil fuel consumption and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

In this regard, the development of electric buses is receiving considerable attention and priority from many countries due to their potential for cost savings, absence of pollutant emissions inherent in fossil fuel vehicles, and reduction of noise pollution.

Currently, people in large cities tend to use more personal vehicles and the urban public transport sector needs to attract more passengers to public transport to reduce pollution.

On January 1, 2024, the E10 electric bus route connecting Ocean Park Urban Area to Noi Bai Airport was put into operation, bringing the total number of green energy bus routes to 10, including the bus routes from E01 to E10.
