Hanoi to strive on turning tourism into a spearhead economic sector
The Hanoi Tourism Department held a conference on January 11 to review its implementation in 2016 and deploy tasks of 2017. Deputy Chairman of the municipal People`s Committee Ngo Van Quy attended the meeting.
In 2016, the municipal Department of Tourism hosted successfully an array of key events such as the "Hanoi Memories" programme, "Friendship Spring travel" activity and Vietnam traditional craft villages tourism festival in Hanoi.
Besides, during the year, Hanoi's tourism proposed the extending of walking streets around Hoan Kiem Lake, which was piloted from the beginning of September, creating a new space for cultural activities and entertainment for both locals and international visitors to the capital city.
The department actively made the advise to the city's authorities promote the image of the capital on the CNN channel.
Hanoi city has earned nearly 62 trillion VND from tourism last year, up 12% year on year, according to the municipal Department of Tourism.
The city drew more than 21.8 million visitors, with over 4 million international visitor arrivals, up 23% compared to the same period in 2015.
Currently, the number of domestic tourists to Hanoi accounts for about 30% of the total visitors in the country. International visitors to the city make up nearly 40% of the country's foreign tourists.
In 2017, Hanoi will strive to attract about 23.61 million tourists, with as many as 4.3 million international arrivals, with total tourism revenues reaching over VND66 trillion, an increase of 8% year on year.
Speaking at the meeting, Deputy Chairman Ngo Van Quy highly appreciated the achievements of the Department of Tourism in 2016.
In 2017, the municipal tourism sector should focus on the implementation of the Resolution No.06 of the City Party Committee on tourism development for 2016-2010 period and the following years, Deputy Chairman Quy stressed.
He also emphasised that the department needs to create a breakthrough in developing tourism, gradually bringing the sector into a spearhead economic field of the capital.
The Deputy Chairman noted that the department should focus on implementing the main tasks, especially the efficient coordination with the CNN channel to promote of Hanoi and Vietnam to lure more visitors to Vietnam in general and Hanoi in particular.
According to Deputy Chairman Quy, in the coming time, Hanoi will also collaborate with cities and provinces nationwide in developing tourism products, standardizing and issueing presentations at tourist attractions across the locality, and build a digital map of Hanoi based on the geographic information system (GIS) technology.
Particularly, Hanoi will speed up to fulfill the review to adjust the city's tourism development plan through 2020 and orientations to 2030 with the aims to develop the Suoi Hai-Ba Vi tourism area into a national travel resort.
The city’s tourism industry targets to earn over VND110 trillion to VND120 trillion by 2020.
In order to achieve the envisaged goals, Hanoi will focus on building, planning and investing in developing tourism products, while calling on strategic investors to be involved in developing tourism in the West Lake and Red River areas in preparation for establishing an exclusive tourist zone in Dong Anh district.
