Hanoi to strive to develop local cuisine into a featured tourism product
Director of Hanoi Department of Tourism Do Dinh Hong told the reporter of the Economic and Urban newspaper that the municipal tourism will implement practical and specific measures to promote Hanoi` cuisine becoming the local featured tourism product in the time ahead.
Hanoi people are well-known for the simple but subtle cuisine. Especially, the city’s food has played the important position in Vietnamese culinary culture. The cuisine of Hanoi is not only diversified, but also remains its traditional feature.
Director of the municipal Department of Tourism Do Dinh Hong noted that Hanoi's cuisine has many tasty dishes which have been famous to many internaional tourists, such as Pho, Bun cha (rice noodle with grilled pork), Bun thang (noodle in chicken broth), and Banh tom (crisp shrimp pastry).
Especially, the recent trip by US President Barack Obama to Vietnam in May this year was paid a special attention by foreign media as he spent time enjoying Bun cha (rice noodle with grilled pork) and Me Tri Com (Hanoi grilled green rice). It has been considered not only to be an opportunity, but also a challenge to develop a culinary tourism product which so far has not been focused on investing in a comprehensively.
On busy streets in Hanoi’s Old Quarter, tourists can see various food shops selling several kinds of foods such as young sticky rice or com, steamed glutinous rice or xoi, cakes, Pho, Bun Cha (rice noodle with grilled pork), Bun Thang (noodle in chicken broth), and Banh Tom (crisp shrimp pastry).
In the recent years, a lot of international travel companies have focused on building tours to bring tourists to restaurants enjoying the Hanoi's cuisine, specially they are ready to organize cooking classes with prestigious chefs if travellers have special requirements.
To develop the city's most popular dishes becoming its special tourism product, the tourism department has been organising some concentrated events such as Street Food Festival (scheduled weekly in the West Lake area); Hanoi - Vietnam tourism traditional villages Festival (annually in October), which will be held to introduce special culinary arts of Hanoi city, exchange and cook dishes of the capital, localities nationwide and foreign countries.
In addition, the local tourism industry will actively co-chair the cooking contests, culinary festivals to introduce the image of Hanoi's cuisine to friends and guests at home and abroad, turning the capital into one of the most attractive destinanions for numerous visitors.

Director Hong stressed that Hanoi's cuisine that is combined all the essence of what the most simple, is the key factor to draw travelers. The Vietnamese cuisine, unlike those in other Asian countries, particularly the most popular dishes of Hanoi remain the traditional culinary features. This is the reason why more and more international visitord interested in and loving Hanoi's cuisine, he added.
