Hanoi's agricultural sector aims for 3% growth in 2024

The city continues to increase the number of safe agricultural production-consumption chains to 159, including 53 for meat products and 106 for plant-derived products.

Hanoi’s agricultural sector is targeting a growth rate of 2.5-3% in 2024, said Nguyen Manh Quyen, Deputy Chairman of the Hanoi People's Committee, adding that the sector will focus on restructuring, regaining growth impetus by improving production efficiency, increasing value, and expanding the market.

He added that to achieve this goal, the city will prioritize developing the concentration of commodity agriculture and adopting new technologies that provide high productivity, quality, environmental benefits and adaptability to climate change.

The sector will promote green and smart ecological agriculture and link them with urban development, rural tourism, service sectors, and experiential education.

Luu Thi Hang, Director of the Hanoi Plant Protection Department, shared that the department will focus on restructuring production in crop cultivation, aiming to improve land use efficiency by reducing rice cultivation areas and developing high-quality rice varieties.

She added that the sector plans to expand vegetable production and increase the area under flowers and ornamental plants. In addition, they will shift from rice production areas in unfavorable terrains to high-value alternative crops.

Nguyen Xuan Dai, Director of the Hanoi Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, reported that 2023 was a successful year for the agricultural sector. The growth rate of the agriculture, forestry and aquaculture sector in the city in 2023 reached 2.74% year-on-year (compared to the set target of 2.5-3%).

The value of agricultural, forestry, and aquaculture production in 2023 reached over VND41.6 trillion (US$1.7 billion), up 2.71% year on year. In terms of structure, the value of agricultural production accounted for 90.44%, aquaculture 9.29%, and forestry 0.27%.

At present, Hanoi has 285 high-tech agricultural models. Among them, there are 185 crop farming models, 45 animal husbandry models, 54 aquaculture models, and one model combining crop and animal husbandry.

Hoang Thi Hoa, director of the Hanoi Agriculture Development Center, said that several high-tech models concentrated in districts such as Me Linh, Gia Lam, Thuong Tin, Dong Anh, Thanh Oai, and Dan Phuong have shown high economic efficiency and suitability, as well as a strong market presence.

The city continues to increase the number of safe agricultural production-consumption chains to 159, including 53 for meat products and 106 for vegetable products. These chains have attracted the participation of many enterprises, cooperatives and farmers. The city has established more than 40 protected trademarks, such as Ba Vi Hill chicken, Soc Son chicken, Mia Son Tay chicken, Van Dinh duck, Dai Thanh lychee, and Boi Khe fragrant rice.

The Hanoi Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has worked with 43 provinces and cities to support the development of 926 safe food supply chains for Hanoi.

Together with other departments, sectors, and localities, the department promotes and supports the implementation of 58 models and facilities for safe agricultural production, such as organic vegetable production, VietGAP, application of high technology, and medicinal plants.
